Ally Goins is the College Success Coordinator for iJAG at the Urban Campus. “I started in November, so I’ve been here for about six months,” Goins says. “iJAG is here to help students succeed not just in school, but in their career paths too.”
iJAG, short for Iowa Jobs for America’s Graduates, offers a range of services designed to prepare students for employment while supporting their academic journey. “We help with resumes, job applications, interview prep, and overall making sure students are meeting their academic goals,” Goins says. “Sometimes it’s as simple as a check-in or a conversation. Sometimes it’s connecting them to local business partners who can support them further.”
When it comes to helping students struggling with employment, Goins says the support is both practical and personal. “We work with local business partners who help students build their resumes and practice interview skills,” she says. “We can even connect them to resources to get professional clothes for interviews. It’s about helping the whole student.”
Students who want to get connected with iJAG can do so easily. “The easiest way is just to send me an email,” Goins says. “From there, we’ll set up a time to talk and see what kind of support they need.”
Goins’s journey to this role began in a very different classroom. “I was originally an elementary school teacher,” she says. “But I had to take a step back for my mental health. I wanted to be in a space where I could still make a difference, just in a different way.” She found that purpose in iJAG. Goins says, “Working with older students felt like a better fit and being able to support them in ways that really impact their future that meant a lot to me.”
Helping students who are nervous or hesitant is something Goins approaches with empathy. “I’ve been there on the job hunt, unsure of what to do,” she says. “Sometimes all it takes is knowing there’s someone to talk you through it. Don’t be scared. I have chocolate and toys!”
Her advice to students who aren’t sure if they need help? “Come in and have a conversation,” she says. “That’s how we figure it out together.”
To stay grounded and motivated in a role that can be emotionally demanding, Goins leans on joy and community. She says, “I remind myself why I’m here to help students. But I also take time for myself spending time with friends, doing things I enjoy, and leaning on my support system. That helps me keep going.”
Goins is available on campus from 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., and students can schedule with her up to a month in advance via email. “If there’s time on my calendar, even a same-day request can work,” she says.
With her mix of experience, empathy, and encouragement, Ally Goins is helping students find their footing both in college and beyond.
