Racheal Meyers is a tutor at the Academic Achievement Center (AAC) at the Urban campus. She has been at the Urban Campus for a year and a half and attended DMACC for over two years.
“The AAC offers a variety of services to students, including general tutoring in math, science, writing, and literacy,” Meyers says. “They also have designated hours for accounting, presentation or speech, and social sciences. Additionally, the AAC provides access to computers in the computer lab, where students can receive help with computer-related questions.”
Meyers says, “Students can access tutoring or academic support at the AAC by simply walking in and signing up to work with whichever tutor is available.” She continues, “The AAC also offers online support, providing the same level of assistance to students remotely.”
“The AAC supports students struggling with time management or organization by leveraging the personal experiences of its tutors,” Meyers says. “Each tutor has experienced college life in different ways and brings unique advice on how to balance academic responsibilities. Tutors range from former teachers and current students to those with a variety of life experiences, which allows them to offer diverse strategies for managing time and staying organized.”
Meyers says she has a “passion for working one-on-one with students.” She enjoys meeting the diverse needs of everyone who walks through the door and strives to help them reach their academic goals.
Ruth-Anne Gostomski is Meyers’s colleague and a tutor at the AAC herself. “[Racheal] is an excellent tutor who has a deep understanding of her students’ needs,” she says. “She is skilled at providing clear instructions and is known for her patience. Racheal uses different teaching methods to accommodate diverse learning styles and can quickly identify and address any problems her students may face.” Gostomski says, “She has built a strong rapport with many students who appreciate working with her, and she serves as a great source of encouragement. Her confidence is also evident, and it contributes to her effectiveness as a tutor.”
When students are hesitant or nervous about seeking academic help, Meyers approaches each interaction as a conversation. “I believe that making it into the room is the first step, and from there, it’s about identifying the student’s needs and working together to address them” says Meyers.
Randa Nasereddin is the Coordinator for the Testing Center and AAC at Urban. She says, “Rachael is friendly, with great attention to detail and highly dependable. I would 100% recommend Racheal to any student, emphasizing her trustworthiness and effectiveness as a tutor.”
Meyers stays motivated and engaged in her role by her love for teaching and tutoring. Even during stressful times, she remains stress-free and passionate about what she does.
“My advice for students unsure whether they need help or could benefit from the AAC’s services is to give it a try” Meyers says. “I encourage them to experience it for themselves and see if it helps them with their studies.” She is deeply committed to her work. She says, “I love seeing students succeed and helping them overcome their challenges.”
The AAC is available on multiple campuses and students don’t need appointments. For more information or to get help on those upcoming assignments visit the Urban AAC.
